Abu Dhabi Airports has reported a remarkable surge in passenger traffic for the first half of 2024. Passenger numbers reached nearly 14 million, marking a substantial 33.5% increase compared to the same period last year.

    Record-Breaking Growth

Zayed International Airport (AUH) alone facilitated over 13.7 million passengers, reflecting an impressive 33.8% growth. This surge was complemented by a notable 24.3% rise in flight movements, with 84,286 recorded during the first half of the year.

    Expansion and New Connections

The significant growth in passenger traffic can be attributed to the expansion of Abu Dhabi Airports’ network. New airlines and routes have been introduced, enhancing connectivity. US Bangla Airlines has commenced flights to Chittagong and Dhaka, while British Airways has launched daily flights to London Heathrow. This expansion supports Zayed International Airport’s goal of becoming a key hub for global travel and trade.

    Innovative Facilities and Enhanced Experience

The newly expanded terminal at Zayed International Airport stands as one of the largest structures of its kind in the world. Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, the terminal features a unique X-shaped design that enhances operational efficiency and passenger flow.

The terminal spans 742,000 square metres and is equipped to handle up to 79 aircraft and 11,000 passengers per hour, effectively doubling the capacity of the previous terminals. It can accommodate up to 45 million passengers annually and offers connections to more than 120 major destinations across 30 international airlines.

Passengers will benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, including biometric technology for streamlined screening and boarding, a vast retail and dining area of 35,000 square metres, and 163 outlets. The terminal is engineered to ensure passengers can swiftly move from kerb to gate in just 12 minutes, reducing wait times and boosting overall efficiency.

    Sustainability Initiatives

Zayed International Airport is committed to sustainability. The new terminal is certified as a “Green Building” under the PBRS with 3 Pearls at the design stage. Over 90% of the steel and 82% of the timber used in its construction are sourced sustainably. The terminal also incorporates water-efficient fixtures and drought-resistant landscaping, achieving a 45% improvement in water usage over the Estidama benchmark.

A highlight of the terminal is the Sana Al Nour, one of the Middle East’s largest environmental art installations. Weighing approximately 100 tons, it consists of 1,632 curved glass panels that enhance daylighting and improve energy efficiency through natural ventilation techniques.

    Advanced Technology and Passenger Convenience

Zayed International Airport is at the forefront of airport technology, featuring a nine-touch-point facial recognition system to streamline the passenger experience and reduce queue times. An advanced baggage handling system processes up to 19,200 bags per hour, and an augmented reality Wayfinder helps passengers navigate the terminal in real time. Additionally, the airport is one of only 15 worldwide to offer U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Preclearance, allowing travellers to bypass inspection lines upon arrival in the U.S.

The impressive growth in passenger traffic and the expansion of Zayed International Airport’s facilities underline Abu Dhabi Airports’ commitment to enhancing its services and network. The airport is well-positioned to continue its role as a major player in global aviation, supporting the emirate’s ambitions to strengthen its position as a premier destination for international travel and commerce.
