Empowering Future Female Scientists on Girls in Science Day
In celebration of the UN’s International Day of Women and Girls in Science, SEA LIFE London Aquarium welcomed four female students from St Ann’s School in London for an exclusive VIP tour. This immersive experience was designed to spark curiosity, foster a love for marine science, and provide hands-on learning opportunities in an engaging environment.
The initiative was part of Merlin’s Magic Wand, a charitable programme committed to creating joy and memorable experiences for children who need them most. The day focused on inclusivity, education, and inspiration, showing young girls that science is not only exciting but also accessible to everyone.
An Immersive Learning Experience
The students were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of SEA LIFE London Aquarium, where they explored marine habitats, interacted with underwater artefacts, and engaged with marine experts. The tour was specially curated to introduce them to the wonders of ocean life through tactile experiences, storytelling, and playful learning activities.
The girls journeyed through the aquarium’s spectacular ocean tunnels, discovering the serene beauty of marine environments. They observed sharks, sea turtles, and rays, gaining a deeper appreciation for ocean conservation and the role of science in protecting marine ecosystems.
Catherine Pritchard, General Manager of SEA LIFE London Aquarium, shared her excitement about the event, stating, “This day was all about igniting curiosity and engaging the senses experiencing the sights, sounds, and wonders of the ocean. Watching these young girls fully immerse themselves in the magic of marine life was truly inspiring. We hope this experience stays with them and encourages them to pursue their passion for science.”
Breaking Barriers in STEM Education
The event was a powerful reminder of the importance of equal access to science education. While women remain underrepresented in STEM fields, initiatives like this help challenge stereotypes and encourage young girls to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Rebecca Hudson-Betts, Project Manager at Merlin’s Magic Wand, highlighted the importance of such initiatives, stating: Merlin’s Magic Wand is committed to creating enchanting experiences that inspire joy and ignite the imagination. Celebrating Girls in Science Day with this extraordinary experience was a privilege, and we hope it inspires the students at St Ann’s School to continue their interest in STEM.”
By offering interactive, real-world learning experiences, SEA LIFE London Aquarium is helping to shift perceptions and demonstrate that science is an exciting and rewarding field for all.
A Lasting Legacy: The ‘London Under the Sea’ Playground
Alongside the VIP tour, the event also introduced an exciting new project the ‘London Under the Sea’ themed playground, set to open at St Ann’s School in Hanwell, London. Set to open in March, this playground will bring the magic of the ocean into everyday play, further fostering curiosity about marine life and science.
With interactive installations inspired by marine habitats, the playground will allow students to engage in imaginative play while learning about the importance of ocean conservation. This initiative reinforces SEA LIFE London Aquarium and Merlin’s Magic Wand’s shared commitment to providing meaningful educational opportunities for children.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Scientists
By combining education, exploration, and fun, this event exemplified how immersive experiences can have a lasting impact on young minds. SEA LIFE London Aquarium’s initiative serves as a shining example of how organisations can support and inspire future female scientists.
As the conversation around women in STEM continues to grow, experiences like this remind young girls that science is for everyone and that their curiosity and passion can lead them to exciting and fulfilling careers.
