Marking a Milestone in Tech Education with a Global Reach
The Open Institute of Technology (OPIT) is set to celebrate a major milestone on 8th March 2025, as its first-ever cohort of students graduate. A total of 40 students will receive a Master of Science degree in Applied Data Science and AI, demonstrating the institution’s commitment to providing high-quality, industry-relevant education in the field of technology.
A Vision for Bridging the Tech Skills Gap
OPIT was founded two years ago by renowned edtech entrepreneur Riccardo Ocleppo and Prof. Francesco Profumo, Italy’s former Minister of Education. Their goal was to bridge the growing global tech skills gap by establishing an accredited academic institution offering innovative BSc and MSc degrees tailored to the demands of the digital economy.
Since its launch, OPIT has expanded its offerings significantly. Initially providing just two degrees—a BSc in Modern Computer Science and an MSc in Applied Data Science and Artificial Intelligence—the institute now boasts two bachelor’s and four master’s programmes. These include specialised fields such as Digital Business, Enterprise Cybersecurity, and Artificial Intelligence.
A Truly Global Learning Experience
With a fully remote learning model, OPIT has attracted a diverse student body from 78 countries, creating an international hub for aspiring tech professionals. The faculty comprises leading academics and industry experts, offering students in-depth knowledge across key technological domains, including software engineering, cloud computing, AI, and cybersecurity.
Remarkably, 80% of OPIT’s students are already working professionals, employed at some of the world’s most prestigious organisations. Graduates and current students are making an impact at leading tech giants such as Accenture, Cisco, and Broadcom, as well as financial powerhouses like UBS, PwC, and Deloitte. Others are driving sustainability and innovation in companies like Too Good To Go, Caritas, and the Pharo Foundation, while some work in critical international organisations like NATO and the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS).
Innovative Learning for Career Advancement
OPIT’s programmes are designed with flexibility in mind, enabling students to fast-track their studies by taking summer courses or extend their education beyond the standard duration. Each degree culminates in a capstone project, providing students with hands-on experience in solving real-world industry challenges.
Examples of recent capstone projects include:
- “AI in Anti-Money Laundering” – Leveraging artificial intelligence to combat financial crime.
- “Predictive Modeling for Climate Disasters” – Using AI-driven analysis to anticipate and mitigate climate-related emergencies.
Expanding Academic Frontiers
Building on this success, OPIT is actively expanding its academic portfolio. Plans are underway to introduce new courses, doctoral programmes, applied research initiatives, and technology transfer collaborations with industry partners. These developments will further enhance OPIT’s reputation as a leader in global tech education.
A Landmark Graduation for OPIT
The March 8th graduation represents a defining moment in OPIT’s journey. Reflecting on this achievement, Riccardo Ocleppo, founder of OPIT, remarked: “The success of this first graduating class marks a major milestone for OPIT. It reaffirms our mission to deliver high-quality, globally accessible tech education that meets the evolving demands of the job market.”
In just two years, we have built a dynamic and professional learning environment that attracts students from around the world and connects them with top-tier companies. This is only the beginning of our journey towards reshaping higher education for the digital era.
With an unwavering commitment to innovation, OPIT continues to redefine online education, equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving tech landscape.
