CM Energy is taking a significant step towards decarbonising the shipping industry by expanding its partnership with BAR Technologies. The two companies are focusing on the large-scale adoption of WindWings® wind-assist technology, designed to enhance fuel efficiency and cut carbon emissions. This move aligns with the industry’s transition towards cleaner and more sustainable shipping solutions.
Scaling WindWings® for a Greener Future
As global shipping faces mounting pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, CM Energy has partnered with BAR Technologies to introduce 20-24-metre WindWings® sails for small and medium-sized vessels. This follows their previous work on 37.5-metre sails for larger ships, marking a strategic shift in making wind-assisted propulsion widely accessible.
Designed for bulk carriers, chemical tankers, and general cargo ships, the new WindWings® technology is optimised for smaller vessels operating across global trade routes. Each sail has the potential to save up to 0.7 tonnes of fuel per day, resulting in a significant reduction in carbon emissions. This innovation helps shipowners meet stringent environmental regulations while lowering operational costs.
Driving Innovation in Wind-Assisted Shipping
CM Energy is leveraging its expertise in advanced energy solutions to accelerate the deployment of WindWings® technology. Unlike conventional sails, WindWings® features an innovative three-element design, delivering 2.5 times more lift than single-element sails. It automatically adjusts camber and angle of attack in response to changing wind speeds and directions, ensuring maximum efficiency without requiring continuous manual adjustments.
John Cooper, CEO of BAR Technologies, highlighted the importance of this initiative: “As wind-assisted propulsion gains traction in the industry, our renewed partnership with CM Energy enables us to provide shipowners with more flexible, high-efficiency solutions. WindWings® is a game-changer, offering significant fuel savings while contributing to global sustainability efforts.”
Supporting the Shipping Industry’s Net-Zero Goals
With the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2030 emissions targets approaching, shipowners are actively seeking viable solutions to reduce their carbon footprint. The expansion of WindWings® technology presents a scalable and cost-effective alternative to traditional fuel-reduction strategies.
CM Energy’s Executive President, Zhan Huafeng, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to a sustainable future: “The growing demand for eco-friendly shipping solutions has been a driving force behind our collaboration with BAR Technologies. By making WindWings® available to a broader range of vessels, we are ensuring that more shipowners can operate efficiently while aligning with global decarbonisation goals.”
Beyond fuel savings, the WindWings® system offers practical advantages, requiring minimal onboard modifications and providing long-term cost benefits. Unlike other wind-assisted propulsion systems, it does not rely on continuous mechanical rotation or energy-consuming fans, making it a highly efficient and low-maintenance solution.
Paving the Way for a Sustainable Shipping Industry
As climate policies become more stringent and fuel prices remain volatile, the maritime industry is looking towards innovative solutions to remain competitive. Wind-assisted propulsion technology has emerged as a key element in the transition to net-zero shipping, offering a practical way to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
The collaboration between CM Energy and BAR Technologies ensures that WindWings® technology can be adapted for different vessel sizes and operational requirements. By accelerating its adoption, both companies are positioning themselves at the forefront of maritime sustainability, helping the industry move towards a greener and more efficient future.
