Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery is set to unveil a major exhibition dedicated to the etching mastery of Rembrandt, one of history’s most celebrated artists. Titled Rembrandt: Masterpieces in Black and White Prints from the Rembrandt House Museum, this extraordinary collection will be on display from 6 March to 1 June 2025, offering UK audiences a rare opportunity to experience the full breadth of Rembrandt’s printmaking genius.

Co-organised by the American Federation of Arts and the Rembrandt House Museum, this exhibition marks the first time that Rembrandt’s etchings have been displayed as a collection outside the Netherlands. As the only UK venue for the exhibition, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery will provide visitors with an exclusive chance to immerse themselves in Rembrandt’s artistry.

    Exploring Rembrandt’s Etching Genius

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606–1669) is revered as one of the greatest artists of all time, known for his unparalleled skill in both painting and printmaking. While many artists of his era used printmaking merely as a way to reproduce existing artworks, Rembrandt saw etching as a standalone art form, constantly experimenting with the medium to create evocative, intricate, and masterfully detailed compositions.

This exhibition will feature over 300 original Rembrandt etchings, tracing his evolution as a printmaker. Visitors will witness his innovative use of light and shadow, his mastery of visual storytelling, and his deeply expressive self-portraits, which offer a glimpse into his personal journey and artistic experimentation.

A Thematic Journey Through Rembrandt’s Prints

The exhibition is structured into thematic sections, each showcasing a different facet of Rembrandt’s artistry:

    • The Art of Storytelling – Exploring how Rembrandt brought narratives to life through his etchings.
    • Light and Shadow – Highlighting his bold use of contrast to create dramatic effects.
    • Self-Portraiture and Identity – Examining how he captured his own likeness, from youthful ambition to the complexities of aging.

Additionally, visitors will see comparative works by Rembrandt’s forerunners and contemporaries, including his teacher Pieter Lastman and his pupil Ferdinand Bol. These pieces will help contextualise Rembrandt’s innovations, particularly his groundbreaking approach to etching, tonal effects, and the striking realism in his portrayals.

Bringing Rembrandt’s Work to New Audiences

Sara Wajid and Zak Mensah, Co-Chief Executives of Birmingham Museums Trust, expressed their enthusiasm about the exhibition, stating: “We are thrilled to collaborate with the American Federation of Arts and the Rembrandt House Museum to present this landmark collection. This is an incredible opportunity for visitors to Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery to experience Rembrandt’s exceptional artistry up close.”

Pauline Forlenza, Director & Chief Executive of the American Federation of Arts, highlighted the importance of the exhibition, saying: “Bringing Rembrandt: Masterpieces in Black and White to new audiences is a tremendous honour. Our collaboration with the Rembrandt House Museum allows us to share these historic works beyond the Netherlands for the very first time.”

Epco Runia, Head of Collections at the Rembrandt House Museum, added: “Each of Rembrandt’s etchings is a standalone masterpiece. When viewed closely, they reveal a world of intricate detail and emotional depth. We are delighted to bring these extraordinary prints to Birmingham.”

    An Unmissable Cultural Experience

This exclusive exhibition is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore Rembrandt’s artistic legacy through his etchings, a medium he elevated to new heights. Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery invites art lovers, historians, and the general public to witness the remarkable talent of a master whose influence continues to shape the world of printmaking.
