Enhancing Accessibility with a Free Software Update
Apple has officially launched its innovative Hearing Aid feature for AirPods Pro 2 in the United Kingdom. This clinical-grade, over-the-counter solution is now available as a free software update, reinforcing Apple’s commitment to using technology to improve health and accessibility.
Sumbul Desai, M.D., Apple’s vice president of Health, stated, “Apple is committed to enhancing lives through technology, and we are thrilled to introduce the Hearing Aid feature in the UK. With AirPods Pro 2, users can now experience a complete and seamless approach to hearing health.”
Addressing the Growing Need for Hearing Support
Millions of people in the UK experience mild to moderate hearing loss, which can significantly impact their well-being. Studies indicate that untreated hearing loss is linked to social isolation and an increased risk of dementia. With Apple’s latest innovation, users can now personalise their hearing experience through an intuitive Hearing Test, which takes approximately five minutes to complete. The test generates a unique hearing profile that dynamically adjusts audio settings in real time, allowing users to engage more effectively in conversations and stay connected to their surroundings.
This advanced feature is seamlessly integrated with AirPods Pro 2, automatically enhancing the audio experience across music, movies, games, and phone calls. Apple’s approach ensures accessibility at an affordable price point, bringing science-backed hearing assistance to a broader audience.
Innovative Features for Personalised Hearing Health
The Hearing Aid feature in AirPods Pro 2 offers users an unparalleled level of control, allowing them to fine-tune their audio settings whenever needed. It is backed by rigorous scientific studies, ensuring reliability and effectiveness. Additionally, AirPods Pro 2 provides a complete hearing health package with:
- Loud Sound Reduction – Prevents exposure to harmful noise levels while maintaining audio clarity.
- Scientifically Validated Hearing Test – Enables users to assess their hearing and receive a summarised report, including an audiogram.
- Secure Data Storage in the Health App – Users can securely store their hearing test results and share them with healthcare professionals for further consultation.
Prioritising Privacy and Security
As with all Apple health features, privacy is at the core of the Hearing Aid feature. When a user’s device is locked with a passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID, their health and fitness data in the Health app remain encrypted. Any health data backed up to iCloud is protected both in transit and on Apple’s servers. With end-to-end encryption enabled by default, Apple does not have access to users’ health data, ensuring the highest level of security.
Availability and Compatibility
The Hearing Aid feature and Hearing Test are available on AirPods Pro 2 with the latest firmware update. Users must pair their AirPods with a compatible iPhone or iPad running iOS 18 or iPadOS 18. These features are designed for individuals aged 18 and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss.
Additionally, the Loud Sound Reduction feature is supported on AirPods Pro 2 when paired with an iPhone, iPad, or Mac running iOS 18, iPadOS 18, or macOS Sequoia or later.
By integrating advanced hearing technology into AirPods Pro 2, Apple continues to lead the way in accessible innovation, empowering users with tools that enhance their daily lives.
