Animal welfare charity Naturewatch Foundation is calling on animal rescues across the UK to apply for the 2025 Pet Rescue Grant, which officially opens for applications on Friday, 24th January. This initiative offers crucial support to organisations rescuing and rehabilitating dogs, cats, and rabbits impacted by the UK’s low-welfare and illegal pet trade.
Thousands of animals fall victim each year to harmful practices such as illegal puppy farming, unlicensed backyard breeding, and reckless pet sales. These practices contribute to the suffering and exploitation of innocent animals, often leaving them in need of urgent care. The Pet Rescue Grant aims to alleviate the burdens faced by animal welfare groups combating these practices, giving rescued animals a second chance at life.
Grant Opportunities for a Greater Impact
Eligible UK charities and community interest companies (CICs) can apply for a grant of up to £10,000 to enhance their rescue and rehabilitation efforts. This funding is crucial for organisations that are at the forefront of helping animals suffering from neglect and abuse in the illegal pet trade. Additionally, for the first time this year, a mini-grant of up to £1,000 is available for unincorporated charities and voluntary organisations that are carrying out essential animal welfare work within their local communities. This grant aims to support grassroots organisations that may otherwise struggle to access large-scale funding.
The Pet Rescue Grant initiative gained significant traction in 2024, providing pivotal funding to organisations like Bliss Cavalier Rescue, Axholme Cat Rescue, and Rabbit Residence Rescue. These organisations used the grant to support animals affected by puppy farming, harmful designer breeding trends, and irresponsible pet sales. The funding helped provide immediate care and long-term rehabilitation for the animals, ensuring they had the best possible chance of recovery and adoption.
Supporting Animal Welfare Amid Challenges
Natale Harney, Campaign Manager at Naturewatch Foundation, highlighted the importance of the grant. “The Pet Rescue Grant is about more than just funding; it’s about helping to give exploited animals a second chance,” she explained. “Although we’re a small charity ourselves, we’re proud to support the incredible work of rescues across the UK. Demand for animal welfare services is higher than ever, and we’re here to help during these challenging times.”
Now entering its second year, the grant programme is set against the backdrop of heightened demand for animal welfare services. UK rescues are grappling with the aftereffects of the Covid-19 puppy boom, the cost-of-living crisis, and recent legislative changes, such as the XL bully ban. These factors have pushed many organisations to full capacity, making funding like the Pet Rescue Grant a lifeline for continuing their vital work.
Campaigning for Long-Term Solutions
Naturewatch Foundation remains steadfast in its commitment to stronger pet welfare protections. The charity actively investigates public tip-offs about illegal pet trade activities and campaigns for robust policies to address the root causes of exploitation. Their ongoing efforts aim to raise awareness and influence policy changes that protect animals from being exploited for profit.
Applications for the 2025 Pet Rescue Grant will provide much-needed support to animal rescues during a critical time. Charities and organisations interested in applying are encouraged to visit Naturewatch Foundation’s website for detailed eligibility criteria and application forms.
With a continued focus on empowering local organisations and fostering a safer future for animals, the Pet Rescue Grant underscores Naturewatch Foundation’s dedication to combating exploitation and improving the lives of animals across the UK.
