A 13-year-old girl was taken to hospital following the Wallsend Churchill Street collision on Friday afternoon, with three emergency service teams responding to the scene. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
What happened at the Churchill Street junction
The incident took place at the junction of Churchill Street and the A1058 Coast Road in Wallsend at around 4.30pm on Friday. A Northumbria Police spokesman confirmed officers received a report via the ambulance service that a 13-year-old girl had been struck by a car as she crossed the road.
‘Emergency services attended the scene and the girl was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening,’ the spokesman said. ‘The driver of the car, a woman in her 40s, remained at the scene to assist officers with their enquiries.’
The girl was transported to hospital by road ambulance rather than air, though the air ambulance was also deployed to the scene.
Three emergency crews on scene for the Wallsend Churchill Street collision
The response was substantial. A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the service received a 999 call at 4.25pm. Two emergency ambulance crews and a clinical team leader were dispatched alongside the air ambulance. The patient, who had sustained a head injury, was taken to the major trauma centre at the RVI in Newcastle for further treatment.
The Great North Air Ambulance Service also confirmed its involvement in the Wallsend Churchill Street collision. A GNAAS spokeswoman said their critical care team was activated at 4.38pm and arrived on scene at 4.56pm, with two doctors and a paramedic on board the aircraft.
‘Our team worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service to assess and treat a patient,’ the spokeswoman said. ‘The patient was taken to hospital by a NEAS road crew, accompanied by our team.’
The level of response, with air ambulance doctors working alongside road crews before handing the patient over for ground transport, reflects standard major trauma protocol when the severity of an incident is initially unclear.
Police appeal for witnesses
Northumbria Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision on Churchill Street to come forward. Anyone with information should contact Northumbria Police quoting reference number NP-20260904-0743.
