TEAM GB OLYMPIC ATHLETE TO BECOME ACTIVE NEWCASTLE’S FIRST ‘THIS GIRL CAN’ AMBASSADOR

TEAM GB OLYMPIC ATHLETE TO BECOME ACTIVE NEWCASTLE’S FIRST ‘THIS GIRL CAN’ AMBASSADOR

Active Newcastle, part of Newcastle City Council, is proud to announce Mica McNeill as their first ever “This Girl Can” Ambassador.

Mica, of Chopwell, Gateshead is the perfect role model for not only women, young and old across the city but for anyone looking to be more physically active in the region.

Mica, aged 24, is a member of the British bobsleigh team who won a silver medal at the 2012 Youth Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria.  She also competed at this year’s Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea gaining much deserved international acclaim.

Mica McNeill, who currently lives in Consett, County Durham talks about This Girl Can in her new ambassadorial role. She said: “This Girl Can is a fantastic campaign that encourages women and young girls to be more active. Its universal appeal means that anyone can take part no matter what their physical condition.”

Mica was asked why it’s important to keep fit. She said: “Taking part and being active in something like This Girl Can has massive health benefits, not only for your internal organs but for your muscles on the outside. It will continue to help you all the way through your life.

“It’s also really good fun, which is the main thing. You can make new friends and meet like-minded people as there’s always someone, somewhere in the same position as you.  Being active really brings people closer together. My message is everyone has to start somewhere. Even if you start by doing a 10-minute power walk on your first day, you’re up and out, and you can build on this day-on-day…eventually you will end up where you want to be!”

Active Newcastle is all about getting more people active and having fun across the city. They offer over 100 activities delivered by fully qualified coaches, who provide support throughout the whole sporting journey.

Active Newcastle aims to increase activity levels within Newcastle and get people moving, and strives to make it easier for people to give new activities a go.

This Girl Can is a national campaign that inspires women to get involved in regular exercise to improve both their physical and mental wellbeing. It has been commissioned by Sport England and funded by the National Lottery.

Cllr Kim McGuinness, cabinet member for culture, sport and public health at Newcastle City Council, said: “Having Mica on board as our This Girl Can ambassador will make a big difference in inspiring the people of Newcastle to try something new, and lead a healthy and active life. Mica is a great example of what can be achieved when you put your mind to something, from walking more often, running your first 5k or even going on to greater sporting success."

The level of support for This Girl Can in Newcastle was seen when more than one-thousand women and girls took part in a special 5k run, walk and cycle during International Women’s Day (8th March).

Active Newcastle continues to deliver This Girl Can activities for women and girls throughout the city, ensuring sessions and activities are accessible to all. Further details can be found on the Active Newcastle website www.activenewcastle.co.uk
