Running

Running is a competition sport that has consistently been a feature of the modern Olympic Games - as well as being an activity that's used as a training method for many other sports and activities.

As a competition sport, running is often divided into events that are categorised by distance, for example, sprints, middle distance, long distance, and marathon - with the winner being the person that runs the distance in the shortest time.

Competitors need different strengths and attributes depending on the distance being run. For example sprinters, like Usain Bolt, running short distances use explosive power. While marathon runners, such as Paula Radcliffe, will need endurance in abundance.

Depending on the event, running can also be done on various surfaces and in different environments - e.g. track, road, cross-country, trail and fell running.

Of course, running doesn’t have to be a competitive sport and many people run for fun, and for the many health benefits that running offers such as weight loss, increased bone density, and cardiovascular improvements.

As well as physical health benefits, running is also great for mental health with runners often describing feeling a 'high' after completing a run. So why not decide to go for a run today?
